New opportunities for Unite!'s future in 2022

21 January 2022

The European Commission recently launched an Erasmus+ call that will allow Unite! - the European university alliance in which Politecnico participates - to redefine its action plan for the years to come. The call aims at supporting existing international consortia, building on already established institutional cooperation in order to intensify and expand their effective success, and thus driving forward the process of transformation of higher education through strong support for European universities. The already successful participation to the call, whose evaluation will take place by next summer, would allow the Alliance to receive additional funding for a period of up to six years.

"The call gives us the opportunity to redefine our mission after two years of intense work – said Tanja Brühl, President of Unite! - The Alliance now has the experience to define a long-term strategy to achieve the goal of defining a new model for a European university that is also a center of innovation and technological development".

The Alliance will soon be enriched by two new members, Graz University of Technology (Austria) and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Poland), technical universities that share the spirit and dynamic approach of Unite!. By the end of 2022, both universities will have completed their integration process into the Unite! community.

New Agenda 2022

A series of important events will begin this year, with participation in the virtual Forum of Universities for the Future of Europe (January 25 and 26), organized in collaboration with the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union as an opportunity to illustrate the role of European Universities in redefining the Europe of the future through dialogue with the various actors of the European Education Area and political stakeholders.

Moreover, on March 3-4, nine students from the United Universities will participate in the European Students' Assembly, which will gather at the European Parliament 200 student representatives selected among the 41 European University Alliances. This will be one of the first meetings aimed at giving EU students a voice, discussing the complex changes that are sweeping Europe. They will do so by participating in several conferences and round tables on key topics: the values of European citizenship; the response to cyber-attacks; the perspective of a European Health Union; agriculture and sustainability as an economic model; the future of our democracy; the role of the Union in the globalized world, alongside powers such as the United States, China and Russia; the management of migration crises; the construction of a digitalized, inclusive and future-oriented European education system.

In past years, the Unite! community has contributed substantially to the advancement of the Alliance. "Collaborations between our universities have steadily increased. Thanks to the large number of experts contributing to the many ongoing activities, many students, faculty and staff have benefited from the Alliance's activities - said Andreas Winkler, the Secretary General of Unite! - All this will benefit from a deeper institutional collaboration in the framework of the new Erasmus+ project, and thanks to the inclusion of two new partners. We are delighted to welcome Graz University of Technology and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, and we are intent on pursuing this path together with them."

During the fourth Dialogue in Barcelona (November 2021), the working groups had the opportunity to share and discuss the present and future of the Alliance. The Governing Platform, the Academic Forum and the student association SURE!, representative bodies of the entire Unite! community, finally met in person articulating the first decisions aimed at ensuring the progress of the Alliance's goals.

The fifth Unite! Dialogue is planned for March 2022, and will be hosted by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, while the sixth, scheduled for September 19-23, 2022, will be organized by the Politecnico.
