Feast of San Giovanni: the students of the MSc in CCNE and ICT4SS tested the Rai-CRITS mobile TV broadcast towards 5G

26 June 2019

During the Feast of St. Giovanni, before the Show in Piazza Vittorio Veneto that concluded the celebrations for the traditional feast on June 24, the Rai Research and Technology Innovation Centre (CRITS) organized a technology demonstration of 5G Broadcast for the teachers and the students of Communications and Computer Network Engineering e ICT for Smart Societies.

The students have been among the first to test this leading edge service provided by RAI CRIT. The signal on air is the evolution of LTE-Broadcast towards 5G, namely 3GPP Release 14 feMBMS, to deliver TV services to mobile devices on conventional terrestrial broadcast network infrastructure, meeting specific broadcast requirements, such as free-to-air delivery, wide-area coverage and cost-efficient distribution to mobile devices, without overloading the mobile cellular network.

‪At 8.30 pm, at the Rai Radio Museum in Via Verdi, 16 - Torino, researchers from the RAI Research Center  present the technology and allow participants to the event to experience this innovative service on their mobile phones, using an experimental 5G multicast receiver developed with the University of Braunschweig and an innovative App in WiFi multicast technology by Global Invacom.

The show shot from the square by the Rai Turin Production Center, the TGR Piedmont and RaiNews24 and from the sky by TIM drones, and images integrated with other shoots of Turin and Piedmont in 4K by Rai Research Center were transmitted in the experimental 5G broadcast technology from the RaiWay transmitter of Torino Eremo towards the city of Turin.
