Smart energy: Turin hosts the most advanced research by Siebel Energy Institute and Politecnico

15 February 2018

In recent years the growing demand of energy and the need of reducing the environment impact of energy’s production and consumption made the scientific community and the industrial world focus on the key role represented by ICT technologies. ICTs can start the process of a structural transformation of all phases in an energy cycle, from generation and storage, to the transmission, distribution, and sale to the smart energy consumption.

The Siebel Energy Institute (SEI) was founded with the aim of promoting a top-level international collaboration among the experts who deal with research in this field. SEI is a consortium where Politecnico takes part as the only Italian partner in the network, together with 8 research centers and universities, the most prestigious ones in the smart energy topics: Carnegie Mellon University; École Polytechnique; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Princeton University; University of California, Berkeley; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Tokyo; Tsinghua University.

On the occasion of the conferment of the Laurea Magistrale ad honorem on Thomas M. Siebel, CEO and Chairman of C3 IoT and Chairman of the Siebel Energy Institute and S. Shankar Sastry, Dean of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and Director of the Siebel Energy Institute, SEI has organized jointly with Politecnico di Torino an international workshop in order to present the most advanced research on the Smart Energy topics.

“It is a great pleasure to bring a sample of the amazing research at the intersection of IoT, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing to Politecnico di Torino, one of the lead partners of the Siebel Energy Institute. The research represented constitutes the conceptual underpinnings of the digital transformation sweeping all sectors of industry: energy, transportation, logistics, healthcare, manufacturing, and beyond. Personally, I am grateful to see the intermingling of cutting edge research of nine major universities worldwide and over ten founding industrial partners”, says the Director of the Siebel Energy Institute Shankar Sastry.

“For Politecnico, being part of Siebel Energy Institute is a great opportunity”, says Marco Gilli, Rector of Politecnico di Torino: “We are really honored to share with global top-level institutions such a challenge for smart energy, a research topic which requires an interdisciplinary approach to be developed which can integrate advanced competences/skills in the field of Science and Technology Information (Big Data, Machine Learning, Internet of Things) and of Energy Systems. We planned to organize this workshop together with the Siebel Energy Institute since we strongly believe that through such a prestigious and international network with top-level academic and industrial partners in this field we will be able to further advance our research in this sector and develop collaborative research projects and, at the same time, enhance the value of our research and technology transfer structures/centres/institutes”.
