Sustainable aviation fuels: agreement signed between the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility (MIMS) and the Politecnico di Torino

12 August 2022

The Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility (MIMS) and the Politecnico di Torino have signed an important three-year collaboration agreement aimed at analyzing and promoting the use of new sustainable fuels in the transport sector, with specific reference to aviation. The objective is to define, in collaboration with ENAC, the National Aviation Authority, a national roadmap to achieve the decarbonisation goals of the sector and its integration within the International (UN-ICAO) and European initiatives, as well as monitoring the progress and implementation of sector policies.

In particular, on a technological-industrial level, the status of the processes in the sector of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) will be analyzed and monitored. The work will also include the development of possible scenarios, for the definition of a roadmap for the introduction of broad scale of the SAFs, the assessment - in view of the European Fit for 55 package, which contains legislative proposals to achieve the Green Deal objectives by 2030 - of the decarbonisation potential of the sector, as well as the analysis of the evolution of the technical sector. From an economic point of view, the work will consider the evolution of SAF production costs, as well as the analysis of possible policy or regulatory measures to facilitate their dissemination and use.

The collaboration, coordinated for the Politecnico di Torino by Professor David Chiaramonti of the Department of Energy (DENERG) and carried out with the involvement of researchers from the Department of Management and Production Engineering (DIGEP), directed by Professor Carlo Cambini, will consider the regulation measures for sustainable aviation fuels, both from a technical-industrial point of view as well as from a policy/regulatory and economic point angle. The Politecnico di Torino will make its multidisciplinary skills available, encouraging the interaction with the many actors (academic and industrial, national and international) with which it permanently collaborates. The Politecnico di Torino will support the Ministry in relations with these main national and international stakeholders.

"The progressive decarbonization of the aviation sector - notes the Italian Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility, Enrico Giovannini - is a complex process that is mobilizing companies, regulatory bodies and ministries of many countries, with a view to international cooperation. With this agreement, our country will be able to elaborate and advance in the various international fora where common rules are defined based on solid technical-economic analyzes, as well as to define the necessary interventions to accompany aviation, a crucial sector for the economy of each country, in the transformation underway ".

According to the Rector of the Politecnico di Torino, Guido Saracco: "The collaboration with MIMS is an important step forward to study new policy tools to support the decarbonization of the transport sector in primis, as well as of the entire Italian economic system, central themes on the agenda of our university for the next years, and the support we intend to give to the sustainable development of our country".
