THE - Times Higher Education - Impact ranking

11 April 2019

The Times Higher Education, the London periodical that compiles international rankings on universities and tertiary education institutions each year, released the first edition of the THE Impact ranking, an innovative, worldwide university rating system. THE Impact ranking assesses the universities’ economic and social impact on the basis of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which the United Nations approved in 2015, aiming to attain them by 2030.

Politecnico di Torino chose to participate in the ranking for SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, where it is concentrating much of its own Third mission work. The University placed 29th in the world, out of more than 290 participating universities. This is evidence of the University’s strong commitment to its region as an essential actor in the urban transformation and enhancement of its cultural heritage, in the creation of a culture of sustainability and generation of concrete stimuli to the development of an inclusive community attentive to sustainability issues.

The Deputy Rector and coordinator of the University’s Green Team, Patrizia Lombardi, who has followed the issue particularly closely, commented: “We have enthusiastically grasped the opportunity this new ranking offers as an opportunity to enhance our commitment to making our cities increasingly inclusive, safe, enduring and sustainable. The University undertakes many urban outreach activities, in particular, those that concern our historic site at Valentino Castle (Castello del Valentino). We never imagined, however, that we’d attain such a gratifying result; this confirms the worth of the journey we’ve embarked on, which engages all our University’s communities on these issues.”
